Twelve power is a deliberate choice, and it is the right one more often than people admit. The extra magnification here is aimed squarely at judging — antler mass, body condition, whether the thing bedded in the shadow is worth a two-hour stalk.

Magnification shrinks the exit pupil, and a small exit pupil is what makes high-power glass go dim and fussy about eye position at dusk. Starting from 50mm rather than 42mm gives the 12x enough light to still be working when the light goes — which is exactly when you need to make the judgement call.
The trade against the 10x50 is field of view and steadiness. You see less country at once, so finding animals takes longer, and twelve power shows your pulse more than ten does.
