The sizing logic is the same as with any patch, but the consequences shift: on a large-diameter barrel an undersized patch is even less effective, because the gap between patch and rifling grows with bore diameter. You end up making passes that accomplish very little and reading a clean patch as a clean barrel.
Square patches are the sensible default over round ones. They fold onto a jag more predictably and are less likely to roll off their own edge partway down the barrel — which is how patches get stranded in a bore.
Buying in hundreds is not overbuying. A genuinely fouled barrel will consume ten to twenty patches in a single session between the wet passes, the brushing, and the dry passes at the end, and a used patch put back into the bore is just returning the fouling you removed.
