Physically this is the same scope as the first focal plane 3-18x50 models, and the mid-to-long-range hunter is the intended owner in both cases. The difference is where the reticle lives, and it changes how the scope behaves in the field more than the spec sheet suggests.
In the second focal plane, the reticle is etched behind the magnifying assembly, so it holds the same apparent size no matter where the power ring sits. Dial the magnification all the way down for a close shot in heavy cover at last light and the reticle is exactly as visible as it was at full power. A first focal plane reticle in that same moment is a faint scratch. That single behaviour is why a lot of experienced hunters still choose second focal plane on a walking rifle.
The cost is real and worth stating plainly: the reticle's hash marks measure correctly at one magnification only — the top of the range. Range and hold at some intermediate power and your holds are wrong. If you want to hold at arbitrary magnifications, take the F1 version of this scope. If you dial elevation and treat the reticle as an aiming point with a wind reference, this is the better instrument.
MOAR is the reticle here — fine enough not to obscure vitals, marked enough to hold a wind call. Elevation comes capped under the FieldSet system, which keeps the turret from being knocked off zero in a scabbard or on a pack, and the included voucher converts it to an exposed dial if you later decide you would rather dial.
