Nightforce built this one for the western and predator hunter and for the law enforcement marksman — people who carry a rifle a long way, shoot it a few times, and need the optic to be invisible until the moment it is not.
The reticle sits in the second focal plane, which is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. A second focal plane reticle stays the same apparent size no matter where the magnification ring is, so it never disappears when you crank the power down for a close, fast shot in poor light — the situation that actually kills opportunities in the field. The price is that its hash marks only measure correctly at one magnification, the top of the range. If you intend to range and hold with the reticle at arbitrary powers, buy a first focal plane model instead. If you dial your elevation and use the reticle mainly as an aiming point, this is the better tool.
The MOAR reticle supports that approach: fine enough not to bury a coyote-sized target, with enough reference marks to hold a wind call without cluttering the view.
Elevation comes capped from the factory under the FieldSet system — no turret to snag on brush or get bumped in a scabbard, and no zero to second-guess after a stalk. When you decide you would rather dial, the included voucher converts it to an exposed dial, standard or engraved to your own ballistics, without sending the scope anywhere.
