Nightforce built the NX8 family around a single idea: compress a very wide zoom ratio into a short, light tube without giving up the mechanical honesty the brand is known for. This model is the most general-purpose result of that project, and it earns the description — it is short enough not to dominate a hunting rifle, and it has enough top end to hold its own on a designated marksman gun or a club match.
The reticle is in the first focal plane, so its subtensions scale with the image and read true at any magnification. That is what makes a scope with this much zoom range genuinely useful rather than just impressive: you can spin the power ring anywhere in its travel and still range, hold, and correct with the reticle. In a second focal plane scope with a range this wide, the reticle is only honest at one setting, which quietly wastes most of the zoom.
Elevation runs on a ZeroStop turret. You set a mechanical floor at your zero, and after dialing for distance you can spin back down until the dial physically stops — no counting revolutions, no reading numbers in the dark, no returning to the wrong rotation. Illumination is DigIllum, and close parallax focus means the same scope works on rimfire and airgun trainers.
The F1 cost is the usual one: at the bottom of the magnification range this reticle gets fine. If most of your shooting is close and fast, the second focal plane version of this scope is the more sensible buy.
